Fluency is the ability to recall math fact quickly, without counting. This skill is important prerequisite for the higher math.
RISING 3
Students entering grade 3 should be fluent in basic fact addition and subtraction, and should be able to skip count (prerequisite for multiplication) with 2,3,4,5,6,7,8, 8, 9 and 10. Once students are able to skip count, they should continue to memorize basic multiplication facts. Skip counting is a prerequisite to multiplication as it is a repeated addition. Below are some resources to help students practice fluency skills, as well as weekly sheets. For rising grade 3, please choose addition/subtraction until student can fluently skip count. At that time, a student can move to multiplication. Rising grade 3 students should complete addition and subtraction sheets on alternate weeks and should go through skip counting each week. These can also be practiced orally. For students required to complete math portfolio, please turn in completed fluency sheets as well.
